Left, Center, Right spray chart and breakdown

Hi everyone,

Premium members can now see spray charts and stat breakdowns by Left, Center, and Right Field. This new feature is available for all relevant stats including:

  • Hits by Left, Center, Right fields
  • RBI by Left, Center, Right fields
  • 1B, 2B, 3B, and HR by Left, Center, Right fields
  • Batting Average (BA) by Left, Center, Right fields
  • On-Base Percentage (OBP) by Left, Center, Right fields
  • Slugging Percentage (SLG) by Left, Center, Right fields

I’ve already used this feature myself to answer questions like:

  • What is my On-Base Percentage to each field? It turns out my OBP was about .200 higher to right field than left. I thought my OBP might higher to right because in slowpitch softball teams will often place weaker defenders in right field. But I did not expect the data to show this much difference.
  • What percentage of my hits were pulled, middle, or away? Most of us are not switch hitters, so a Left vs. Center vs. Right spray chart is effectively also a Pull vs. Middle vs. Push spray chart as well. My data shows a fairly even distribution of hits to each field. This surprised me because I anticipated a much stronger pull hitting tendency.

Let me know if you would like other iterations of this spray chart visualization.

Stat breakdowns and spray charts are now color-coded for more insights
Spray Charts by Outcome Color Coding

Improving on spray charts and hitting stat breakdowns included in Advanced Stats, those visualizations are now color-coded for more insights.

Using this hit color coding visualization, using my own data I can see that most of my singles finish in short left field, which makes sense because those hits are probably going between the third baseman and shortstop.

Conversely I could also see that my real power comes on hits to left-center field. I am hoping that my speed training this offseason will turn some of those deep drives to left-center from doubles into triples.

Cheers,
Brian
